Alternative / Complementary Therapy

Many patients ask if they can take alternative therapy (vitamins/herbals, etc.). Sometimes, even though products are labeled as “natural”, they may still have serious interactions with your treatment plan. As well, some products that you purchase from a naturopath may not have a full list of ingredients, which makes it very difficult to know if they may cause interactions with other drugs used during your treatment.

When prescribing chemotherapy and even radiation, most oncologists prefer that patients do not combine standard treatment with naturopathic treatment to avoid serious interactions or side effects.

You should always review any plans you have about using any complementary medicines while on treatment with your oncology care team. Open communication ensures that you are receiving the most complete and comprehensive care.
